{"id":5391,"date":"2017-10-10T18:17:32","date_gmt":"2017-10-10T18:17:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/financiallyfitfoundation.org\/?p=5391"},"modified":"2018-11-01T02:01:01","modified_gmt":"2018-11-01T02:01:01","slug":"consumer-financial-protection-bureau-surveyed-us-americans-results-pretty-sucky","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/financiallyfitfoundation.org\/site\/consumer-financial-protection-bureau-surveyed-us-americans-results-pretty-sucky\/","title":{"rendered":"The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau surveyed us Americans, and the results are pretty sucky."},"content":{"rendered":"<div>Here\u2019s why \u2013<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Despite having \u201crecovered\u201d from the Great Recession (can you believe that happened a decade ago?!); and&#8230;<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>despite having the highest median income in history (~$58,000 a year); and&#8230;<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>despite impressive gains in the economy; and&#8230;<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>despite economists saying that we\u2019re coming up on \u201cfull employment\u201d (meaning that the unemployment rate is as low as can be expected) &#8212;<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>a report released last week tells a sad tale of our financial well-being.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>A heartbreaking number of Americans are financially fragile.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>43% of Americans are having a tough time making ends meet.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>More than 1\/3 of us face serious material hardships, like struggling to pay for groceries or necessary medical treatment.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Even 20% of people in the AVERAGE range for financial well-being, report occasional difficulty with paying for basics like food.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>These numbers make me wanna cry!<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>This should NOT be happening.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>It doesn\u2019t make sense, but here we are.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>This is not good news, but if I\u2019m being totally honest, it isn\u2019t news to me.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>On the whole, we\u2019re a financial mess, too embarrassed to acknowledge it, unless it\u2019s an anonymous survey.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Way too many of us, even with decent jobs and solid incomes, are financially insecure.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The reasons are plenty, and some are political, so I&#8217;ll spare you the rant (as much as I love talking politics!)<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The more important conversation is about what to do now.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>I can&#8217;t believe I&#8217;m about to quote Dr. Phil right now, but he kinda says it best: &#8220;you can&#8217;t change what you don&#8217;t acknowledge.&#8221;<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Sidebar confession: I recently went to a taping of the Dr. Phil show. I was doing a friend a favor. Really. But it was fun! And I guess we got a split second of screen time. OK &#8211; I&#8217;ve acknowledged it. Can we never speak of this again?! Thanks.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>So we start by telling the truth. Once enough of us acknowledge it to ourselves and to each other, we&#8217;ll be brave enough to ask for help.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Then The survey doesn\u2019t give us any fixes to this problem, but it implies that financial knowledge and emergency savings are major part of the answer.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>It\u2019s all about taking care of your money daily, saving monthly, and budgeting annually.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Of course, that\u2019s what we\u2019re all about.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>And very, very soon we\u2019ll unveil our entirely revamped program \u2013 it\u2019s the same curriculum but at a slower pace, with more guidance and one-on-one attention.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>I\u2019m busting at the seams I\u2019m so excited about this!<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>I think you\u2019re gonna love it.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>So watch your inbox.
