A scary anonymous Facebook post

By May 6, 2016No Comments
[I apologize for the spacing (or lack thereof), for the life of me I couldn’t get the site to cooperate but thank you for reading anyway!]
I saw this in a Facebook group of nearly 20,000 people and thought that you would gain something by reading it.
First the post:
ANONYMOUS POST!
Hello (group), Does anyone have any referrals that can help with credit cleanup services that take care of everything for you? And financial advice? My husband makes almost $200K a year and we pretty much live paycheck to paycheck. We are clearly doing something wrong. We want to buy a house but need help with our credit first. Help! Thank you!
Some of the noteworthy comments:
From the lady who gave it to her straight –
$200,000 a year and living paycheck to paycheck? Do you have a ton of medical bills from a horrible illness that wasn’t covered by insurance? If not, let’s be real and say obviously you are living WAY beyond your means. You need to make a budget and stick with it in order to get out of debt. You should be able to live on half of what he makes while you are getting rid of your debt. Go to your bank and see what they have to offer to help with your situation.
Blunt as she may be, she has a point.
From a tax attorney –
You are not alone. Every day I meet professionals who make 10, 20, even $30,000 a month and are still behind on their bills and living paycheck to paycheck. It has more to do with how you manage your money, how you feel about money and what you do with it than how much you make.
Yes, yes, yes. This woman knows what she’s talking about.
Finally, my advice –
The most troubling part of this plea is not about making $200K and living paycheck to paycheck, it’s that she’s looking for “services that take care of everything for you.” I respectfully suggest shifting this mindset, the idea that someone else can take care of this problem for you. For better or worse, this is an inside job. Services are tools that YOU can use in your journey to fix mistakes and help you establish healthy habits. They can be your GPS but you’ll need to drive. Otherwise, you’ll just be placing a band-aid over an infected wound. Make no mistake about it – the journey I’m proposing will be uncomfortable, messy, and even emotional (aren’t all the good journeys a bit like this?!) – but you and your family will be infinitely better for it. Its value will make a new house look like a consolation prize.
